Some bikes are chosen based on the specifications. Others need to be tried out in person. The E-Fati TSU VAE, a foldable electric tricycle, clearly falls into the second category. It’s in stock at our shop in Prilly, and we invite you to come and try it out at your leisure, with a mechanic on hand to answer any questions you may have.
A tricycle designed for stability
Three wheels mean, first and foremost, stability when stationary and when setting off. According to the product specifications, the E-Fati TSU VAE features a 6061 aluminium frame, with three wide 20"×2.4" wheels, front suspension, a suspension stem and a differential on the rear axle. All of this is designed to ensure comfort both in the city and on gentle trails.
It’s also foldable: once folded, it takes up less space, which makes it easier to store or transport. For anyone short of space in a hallway or cellar, this is a real selling point.
Motor, battery and assistance
The rear motor is a Bafang 48 V – 500 W (maximum 45 Nm). The Samsung 48 V / 20 Ah (960 Wh) lithium-ion battery offers a range of approximately 25 to 60 km or more, depending on usage, with a recharge time of 6 to 7 hours. Bear in mind that this range is quite broad: the terrain, the load being carried and the level of assistance selected all make a significant difference.
According to the video from the E-FATI channel, there are five levels of assistance, and the power output of each can be adjusted. Please note: the video features the E-FATI T model, whilst our review covers the TSU. The motor and battery specifications are the same, and the video states that the standard equipment is common to all E-FATI tricycles.
Brakes, gears, lighting: the equipment
What we like about the workshop model is that it comes fully equipped as standard. According to the video and the e-fati.ch website, the features include:
- three hydraulic disc brakes (180 mm at the front, 2×160 mm at the rear), with a parking brake on the lever;
- a Shimano Nexus 7-speed internal hub, operated by a twist grip, which allows you to change gears even when stationary, without the risk of derailing;
- a headlight and rear lights that switch on automatically, with two brake lights;
- a thumb-operated throttle, a TFT display, a spring-loaded seatpost, a telescopic fork, mudguards and a chain guard.
For carrying goods, two utility baskets are provided: one at the rear (450×370×200 mm, 25 kg) and one at the front (330×283×132 mm, 10 kg). The manufacturer’s website also mentions assembly checks carried out in Switzerland, as well as Swiss after-sales services and a Swiss warranty.
Why you should try it before you buy
A tricycle doesn’t handle like a bike: you don’t lean into bends, and the feel of the three wheels is different. A test ride allows you to check several things that the specifications don’t mention:
- whether the saddle position and height suit you;
- whether the size makes you feel confident on your usual routes;
- whether you find the folding mechanism and weight manageable at home;
- whether the levels of assistance and the thumb-operated throttle meet your expectations.
We can also adjust the saddle and show you how to fold the bike, as well as demonstrate the baskets and windscreen whilst you’re here.
Our advice: come along with a clear idea of your usual journeys and what you carry. Let us know if you have steps to negotiate or limited storage space. With this information, the test ride will be very informative. Next, bear in mind maintenance: hydraulic brakes and the battery need regular checks, and that’s what we specialise in.
